Healthy Pizza Recipe (vegetarian/ vegan friendly)

Besides fish tacos, pizza is probably one of my favourite foods. Who doesn’t like pizza?? But pizza can be loaded with carbs, fat, sugar, salt, etc… And thats why I like to make my own! I would say this recipe is a healthier alternative because all the ingredients are in your control. I like using the pita as a base because it makes portion control easier and it contains simple ingredients. Making your own pizza sauce is also way better because you can customize the taste and reduce the sugar and sodium. This recipe is also faster to make and cheaper than ordering a pizza. I typically eat one of these pizzas with a side of cut up vegetables or salad.

Disclaimer: I’m not a vegetarian or vegan- but my best friend (you know who you are) convinced me to reduce my dairy intake and I really love vegetables so I made this recipe vegan friendly. You can definitely add meat to this or use regular cheese if you’d like. There are endless combinations of toppings you can add! The next time I make this for my boyfriend Jason, I will probably use spinach, broccoli, chicken and mushrooms.

Before going into the oven

Healthy Pizza Recipe

Prep time: 25 minutes
Cook time: 17 minutes
Yield: 4 Pizzas

Ingredients
4 Pita or whole wheat flat bread
1.5 Cups of grated cheese
1 Whole bell pepper (diced)
4 Medium sized mushrooms (diced)
1 Whole zucchini (sliced)
2 Cups of spinach

Sauce Ingredients
1 Small can of tomato paste (350ml)
1 tsp of garlic salt
1 Tbsp of dried basil
1/2 Tbsp of oregano
1 Tbsp of grated cheese
1 tsp of sugar

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees celsius
2. Grate cheese (if necessary)
3. Prepare sauce- mix all ingredients together in a separate bowl
4. Spread sauce evenly on pita
5. Top pizza starting with cheese, spinach then rest of vegetables
6. Top with more cheese (optional)
7. Bake for 15 minutes at 375 degrees celsius
8. Broil for 2 minutes on low or until cheese melts on top
9. Cut with food scissors or eat as one and enjoy!
